Ejemplo:

If you think I am going to throw in the towel you are wrong.

He threw in the towel.

El se ha rendido.

1.
(to be) flat broke .... no tener ni un duro/estar sin un duro
(to be) strapped for cash .... andar mal de dinero

Ejemplo:
-Due to her constant spending, Sara is flat broke.
-I´d love to help Sara but I am also strapped for cash.

2.
To make ends meet ... llegar a fin de mes
To make do .... arreglárselas/apañárselas

Ejemplo:
-I don´t know how you make ends meet with all those bills to pay!
-It´s a mystery to me, but somehow I make do!.

3.
(to be) on a tight budget ....tener un presupuesto reducido/muy apretado
to work on a tight budget .... trabajar con un presupuesto ajustado

Realmente cualquier presupuesto suele ser reducido o apretado!!!

Ejemplo:
-Since I stopped working I am on a tight budget.
-This year we have been working on a tight budget as their seems to be so many expenses.

The London Underground - El metro de Londres

"Mind the Gap" is heard on the London Underground all the time, it reminds passengers to be careful of the space between the platform and the cars. The London Underground system known as "the tube" is easier to navigate than one may think when they first look at the map.

You can pick up an Underground map at any tube station or download one oneline from "Visit London". The various tube lines are designated by diferent colours. Interchanges are clearly designated too. There are 12 Underground lines in greater London and over 300 stations, generally the trains run Monday to Saturday from 5 a.m. to midnight with fewer trips on Sunday.

Fares are designated by zones, zone 1 and 2 are in Central London and Zone 6 at the outer edge. It is cheaper to travel zones 3,4,5 and 6 than 1 and 2, however you have to pay for all the areas which you pass along the way. It is recommended to buy an Oyster card. It offers several different options, Oyster Pay as you go card or Oyster Travelcard. The Oyster Travelcard allows unlimited travel for a certain amount of time (1,3 or 7 days). The Oyster Pay as you go card allows you to put money on your card, when it runs out you refill the card. With the pay as you go card once you have reached a certain amout of money on a particular day then the rest of the day is free, this is called a cap system.

You must always check the front of the incoming train to make sure you are going in the right direction. Tube´s do not run all night, the last train runs around 1:30 a.m. or earlier. London has a nightbus service which runs all night.

Ejemplo:
I went to see the school play the other day, it was a turn up for the books, they are fantastic dancers, I was impressed!.

Off the record (algo confidencial)

Between you and me (entre tú y yo)

Ejemplo:
Can you tell me where you got that information off the record?
Between you and me, it was your brother.

¿Puedes decirme de dónde sacaste esa información confidencial?

"Off the radar" indica que alguien no esta localizable (ni por radar) o que lleva tiempo sin dar señal de vida.

Ejemplo:
-Where on earth have you been?
-I was off the radar for a while.
-I was worried about you!
-No need to worry I was just busy.

-Dónde has estado?

-Estaba preocupado!

The London Eye

After its opening in the year 2000 the big wheel of 135 feet high known as "The London Eye" and sometimes also known as "The Millennium Wheel" has become one of the most emblematic icons of the city of London. The London Eye which is an engineering design achievement took seven years to build by hundreds of workers from five different countries.

It was the largest big wheel in the world until the year 2006 when it was surpassed by the "Star" of Nanchang and later by the "Singapore Flyer" in 2008 which reached 165 meters high setting a new world record.

The structure of The London Eye weighs 10 tons and is composed of 32 glass cabins with a capacity of up to 25 people in each one. The structure constantly rotates at a slow speed in order to allow people to go on board without having to stop the wheel from turning. The journey through the heights of the city of London takes about 30 minutes in total. It offers panoramic views of both the city and the countryside. On a clear day it is possible to achieve a visibility of up to 40 kilometres, however if there is too much sun the clarity obscures parts of the city.

It’s impressive to see it from a distance but the nearer you approach it, the more you fall in love with it.

Ejemplo:

What a day! first I missed the bus and then I lost my purse! Looks like I got out of bed on the wrong side!.

What´s wrong? Did you get out of bed on the wrong side?

If you sign here the contract is all yours. Hold your horses! I didn´t say I would accept it.

Ejemplo:

Martin hit the nail on the head when he said the team´s problem is that the players don´t have confidence in one another.

Occasionally we will talk about things .......

Today ..."The Telephone Box"

The first typical English phone
booth was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott for a competition in 1924. Sir
Giles won the competition and named his design the "K2" which was
later introduced to the streets in 1926. Several variations on the design
followed later on, eight variants in total were introduced between 1921 and
1968 when the public telephone network was part of the General Post Office,
however the design that was more successful was the "K2". The colour
red was chosen so that the telephone booths would stand out and be easily
recognizable.

The Telephone Box has become an icon of British
design, alongside the black taxi and the Routemaster bus. It is part of British
heritage and identity but despite this, with the development of modern mobile
technologies and increased ownership of Smartphone’s the red Telephone Box is
under threat, with numbers declining. In the 80s there were over 70,000 on the
streets, but today there is as little as 200 examples remain on British
streets. Such a shame!

Ejemplo:

You have a swimming class this week. Don´t worry there´s nothing to it. You will be O.K.
Esta semana tienes una clase de natación. No te preocupes no tiene gran misterio. Lo conseguiras.
