To throw in the towel .... tirar la toalla

Cuando un boxeador no puede mas, su entrenador tira su toalla para parar el combate. "Throw in the towel" significa que uno se rinde, que no va a seguir intentándolo. Se puede utilizar en situaciones pasadas, presentes o futuras y en contextos como el amor, el deporte o la política.

Throw es irregular, el pasado es threw y el participio pasado thrown.

Ejemplo:

If you think I am going to throw in the towel you are wrong. 

Si piensas que me voy a rendir estas equivocado. 

He threw in the towel.

El se ha rendido.

To make ends meet ...llegar a fin de mes

Hay muchas expresiones y maneras de expresar "andar justo"  de dinero.

1.
              (to be) flat broke .... no tener ni un duro/estar sin un duro
              (to be) strapped for cash .... andar mal de dinero

Estas dos expresiones coloquiales se usan muy a menudo cuando uno quiere referirse a las dificultadas económicas. Aveces se usa la expresión "flat broke" cuando uno esta en la ruina pero mas bien se usa para decir que no tiene ni un duro.

Ejemplo: 
-Due to her constant spending, Sara is flat broke.
-I´d love to help Sara but I am also strapped for cash.

Debido a que constantemente esta gastando, Sara está en la ruina.
Me encantaría ayudar a Sara, pero también ando mal de dinero.

2.
            To make ends meet ... llegar a fin de mes
            To make do .... arreglárselas/apañárselas

Estas dos expresiones indican que se gana lo justo para llegar a fin de mes. "To make do" se utiliza cuando realmente uno no llega a fin de mes pero tiene que apañar con el poco dinero que tiene.

Ejemplo: 
-I don´t know how you make ends meet with all those bills to pay!
-It´s a mystery to me, but somehow I make do!.

¡No sé cómo llegas a fin de mes con todas esas facturas que tienes que pagar!.
¡Es un misterio para mi, pero no se como me las apaño!

3. 
           (to be) on a tight budget ....tener un presupuesto reducido/muy apretado
           to work on a tight budget .... trabajar con un presupuesto ajustado

Realmente cualquier presupuesto suele ser reducido o apretado!!!

Ejemplo:
-Since I stopped working I am on a tight budget.
-This year we have been working on a tight budget as their seems to be so many expenses.

Desde que dejé de trabajar estoy con un presupuesto apretado.
Este año hemos estado trabajando con un presupuesto ajustado ya que parece que hay muchos gastos.

The London Underground - El metro de Londres

"Mind the Gap" is heard on the London Underground all the time, it reminds passengers to be careful of the space between the platform and the cars. The London Underground system known as "the tube" is easier to navigate than one may think when they first look at the map.

You can pick up an Underground map at any tube station or download one oneline from "Visit London". The  various tube lines are designated by diferent colours. Interchanges are clearly designated too. There are 12 Underground lines in greater London and over 300 stations, generally the trains run Monday to Saturday from 5 a.m. to midnight with fewer trips on Sunday.

Fares are designated by zones, zone 1 and 2 are in Central London and Zone 6 at the outer edge. It is cheaper to travel zones 3,4,5 and 6 than 1 and 2, however you have to pay for all the areas which you pass along the way.  It is recommended to buy an Oyster card. It offers several different options,  Oyster Pay as you go card or Oyster Travelcard. The Oyster Travelcard allows unlimited travel for a certain amount of time (1,3 or 7 days). The Oyster Pay as you go card allows you to put money on your card, when it runs out you refill the card. With the pay as you go card once you have reached a certain amout of money on a particular day then the rest of the day is free, this is called a cap system.

You must always check the front of the incoming train to make sure you are going in the right direction. Tube´s do not run all night, the last train runs around 1:30 a.m. or earlier. London has a nightbus service which runs all night.

To not miss a trick ....no escapársele ni una

To not miss a trick ...no escapársele ni una, una persona que esta muy atento y mentalmente ágil

To be nobody´s fool/to be no fool ....... no tener un pelo de tonto

Estas son dos expresiones muy útiles para hablar de personas avispadas y mentalmente ágiles.

Ejemplo:
The teacher was known for not missing a trick.
El profesor era conocido por estar en todo,  no se le escapaba ni una!

When he wants to do it well, he does, he´s nobody´s fool!
Cuando lo quiere hacer bien, lo consigue, ¡no tiene ni un pelo de tonto!

A turn up for the books !... ¡Menuda sorpresa, eso si que no lo esperaba!

Se usa "A turn up for the books" cuando algo es totalmente inesperado, cuando algo te da una gran sorpresa, que puede ser agradable o no.

Ejemplo:
I went to see the school play the other day, it was a turn up for the books, they are fantastic dancers, I was impressed!.

El otro día fui a ver las actuaciones de los alumnos en el colegio, ¡menuda sorpresa, son bailarines fantásticos, eso si que no me lo esperaba, me quedé impresionada!.

Mum´s the word ....de esto, ni palabra!

• Off the record (algo confidencial)
• Between you and me (entre tú y yo)
• Mum´s the word (de esto, ni palabra)

Las primeras dos se usan para introducir el secreto en cuestión.  La tercera se dice después de revelar la información reservada.

Mum´s the word aparece en Shakesphere en la obra Enrique VI del año 1592, no significa literalmente "mother" si no "mmmmmm shhhhhhhh" es decir el tararear con  la boca cerrada.

Ejemplo:
Can you tell me where you got that information off the record?
Between you and me, it was your brother.

¿Puedes decirme de dónde sacaste esa información confidencial? 
Entre tú y yo, que era su hermano.
